Academy students listen to a lecture about Tchaikovsky’s ballets

Renowned public figure Denis von Meck held a lecture “Tchaikovsky Ballets – History and Modernity” for students and teachers of the Academy of Choreography.

On November 22, 2022 Denis von Meck, the founder and the head of the International charitable foundation named after Nadezhda Filaretovna von Meck, visited the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography. The guest of the Academy gave a lecture on the works of composer P. Tchaikovsky. The lecture was listened with great interest by the pupils of the school-college, as well as students, undergraduates and teachers. The lecturer spoke not only about the work, but also about the great composer’s life journey, noting that music was his vocation.

“You are studying at a creative institution, I am sure that you too have found your calling by choosing choreography,” von Meck said, addressing the audience.

In addition, he spoke about Tchaikovsky’s friend and patron, Nadezhda von Meck, thanks to whose help the composer was able to leave an invaluable artistic legacy.

Denis Andreevich von Meck is a public figure, collector, philanthropist, descendant of the von Meck, Tchaikovsky and Davydov families. Family historian, researcher, publicist, publisher, member of many Russian and foreign cultural and historical societies. She is engaged in archival and research work and international activities, promotes festivals and competitions.

Nadezhda Filaretovna von Meck (1831-1834) was a philanthropist, the wife of railway magnate Karl Fedorovich von Meck. She was a close friend and patron of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. She supported him both financially and morally, was his “best friend” (as Tchaikovsky himself wrote in his letters). They were friends by correspondence, not meeting in person, but they intended for their family lines to cross. Thus, through their efforts, von Meck’s son Nikolai married Tchaikovsky’s niece Anna Davydova. Less is known about her influence on the fortunes of C. Debussy, G. Wieniawski, and others. She was a shining example of an entrepreneur, running multi-million dollar businesses while raising 11 children. Her family and children made a significant contribution to the economy, social life, and culture of Russia.
