About the Festival

The International Festival of Choreographic Educational Institutions "Temps lié" was first held in May 2018, supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Foundation for the Development and Support of Ballet and National Dance, as part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of Astana city.

The second "Temps lié" festival took place online in November 2021, again supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This year was especially significant for Kazakhstan, marking the 30th anniversary of the country’s independence.

The Festival aims to develop and promote choreographic art, facilitate international exchange of creative achievements in choreographic education, advance and popularize the creative accomplishments of the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography both domestically and globally, enhance the performance skills of the participants, and identify and support talented.

INTERNATIONAL BALLET FESTIVAL «TEMPS LIE-2018»

From May 3 to 5, 2018, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Foundation for the Development and Support of Ballet and National Dance, the first International Ballet Festival "Astana in the Rhythm of Dance" ("Temps Lié") was held as part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the city of Astana. The festival featured 27 students from 14 choreographic institutions from near and far abroad and 81 students from the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography.

Honorary Guests of the Festival:

  • Ulyana Lopatkina, People's Artist of Russia, laureate of the State Prize of Russia and the Government of Russia, winner of the "Golden Mask" theater award and the "Benois de la Danse" prize.
  • Irek Mukhamedov, world ballet star, leading dancer of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and the Royal Ballet in London, choreographer and teacher.
  • Ekaterina Kuzmina, Honored Artist of Russia, laureate of the "Golden Soffit" award, teacher, choreographer, deputy director for special disciplines, and instructor at the Boris Eifman Dance Academy.
  • Xiao Suhua, professor at the Beijing Dance Academy, choreographer, teacher, and ballet theorist.
  • Keisuke Kosaka, director of the Sofia Ballet Academy in Japan.
  • Shakhriyor Mamatkulovich Tokhtasimov, rector of the Tashkent State Higher School of National Dance and Choreography, recipient of the "Shuhrat" medal of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

On May 3, 2018, the Festival was officially opened with a concert by students of the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography. On May 4, 2018, a concert featuring festival participants took place. The Festival concluded on May 5, 2018, with a Gala Concert.

As part of the Festival, four master classes in classical dance were conducted by Ulyana Lopatkina and Irek Mukhamedov, and a master class on plastic expressiveness was conducted by Ekaterina Kuzmina.

INTERNATIONAL BALLET FESTIVAL «TEMPS LIE-2021»

The second International Festival of Choreographic Educational Institutions "Temps lié" was held online from November 15 to 19, 2021, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This festival took place in a very significant year for Kazakhstan, marking the 30th anniversary of the country’s independence.

The festival received 24 applications from 10 choreographic schools worldwide. Participants presented performances in three categories: classical dance, folk-stage dance (folk and stylized folk), and contemporary dance. The best performances were selected to participate in the final Gala Concert on November 19, 2021.

The official opening of the Festival on November 15, 2021, featured the world premiere of Marius Petipa's unique ballet "The Romance of the Rosebud and the Butterfly," set to music by Riccardo Drigo. An International Round Table "Modern Trends in the Development of Choreographic Education" was also held, gathering representatives from the Academy’s partner universities and top management.

CONTEST WINNERS

Grand Prix (diploma and 300,000 tenge) was awarded to Diyar Muratbekov (Kazakh National Academy of Choreography)

1st Place (diploma and 200,000 tenge) was awarded to Rustem Amirkbekov (Kazakh National Academy of Choreography)

2nd Place (diploma and 150,000 tenge) was awarded to Yerzhan Duisenbay (Gulder Ensemble of the Roza Baglanova State Concert Organization "Kazakhconcert")

3rd Place (diploma and 100,000 tenge) was awarded to Bakhtiyar Arshanbek (M. H. Dulati Taraz Regional University)

Special Prize from Abirov’s daughter, Kamilya Daurenovna (diploma and 100,000 tenge) was awarded to Marat Mukhamedzhan (T. K. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts)

The Shara Zhienkulova Republican Contest of Kazakh Dance introduces audiences to the contemporary repertoire and development trends of national dance, enabling the discovery of outstanding performers and the exchange of creative achievements and professional experience.


The contest aims to identify talented dancers, choreographers, and educators in the field of Kazakh pop and folk dance, promoting these art forms within society. It seeks to attract the attention and interest of the younger generation in Kazakh dance and the study of national traditions and customs.


The Shara Zhienkulova Contest was first held in 1992 at the A. V. Seleznev Almaty Choreographic School. In 2012, it was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the legendary dancer and organized by the Kazakh National University of Arts. The Kazakh National Academy of Choreography served as the founder and organizer of the fifth and sixth contests.


INTERNATIONAL BALLET FESTIVAL «TEMPS LIE-2024»

From November 7-9, 2024, the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography holds the III International Festival of Professional Choreographic Educational Institutions "Temps lié". This festival has already become a traditional event bringing together the best choreographic schools in the world on one stage.

Participants of the festival: Boris Eifman Dance Academy and Beijing Dance Academy are two prestigious educational institutions whose graduates perform on the world's leading stages. This is a unique opportunity to see the skills of the students of these world-renowned academies and enjoy their interpretation of classical and modern ballet art.

On November 7, at 19:00, the festival will open with the ballet "The Romance of the Rosebud and the Moth" performed by students of the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography. This ballet is the hallmark of the Academy. The ballet, which was recreated for the students of the Academy.

On November 8, world ballet stars will hold master classes for festival participants: Diana Vishneva and Vladimir Malakhov.

Also, at 15:00, a round table "Prospects for the development of choreographic schools in the modern education system" will be held, where domestic and international partner universities of the Academy will take part.

On November 9, at 17:00, a Gala evening awaits the audience, where students of the Boris Eifman Dance Academy and the Beijing Dance Academy will perform.
