Academy Faculty and Students Conduct Kazakh Dance Masterclass at GITIS

From 13 to 15 November 2024, the First International Scientific and Practical Conference, "Language and Dance. The Language of Dance", took place in Moscow, organised by the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) and the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The three-day conference featured sections on topics such as "Artificial Intelligence and Multimodality (Gestures)", "Language, Terminology, and Contemporary Dance Trends", "Language and Dance in Theatre, Gestures in Literature and Music", "Language and Classical Dance: Heritage, Gestures, Terminology", "Dance and Ethnicity: The Influence of Language and Culture on Dance", and "Dance and Gesture Across Times and Cultures". The practical section included masterclasses on various aspects of choreographic art.

The event brought together scholars, choreographers, and specialists from Russia, Belarus, the Netherlands, and Kazakhstan, representing institutions such as GITIS, the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, Moscow State University, Moscow State Academy of Choreography, Boris Eifman Dance Academy, Igor Moiseyev Ensemble, the Institute of Linguistics of RAS, Kalmyk State University, North Ossetian State University, Ufa State Institute of Arts, T. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts (Almaty), and the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography (Astana), among others.

The Kazakh National Academy of Choreography was represented by Senior Lecturer and Chief Ballet Master of the “Gulder” ensemble, Candidate of Art History, Anvara Sadykova, as well as postgraduate students Inkar Aidarkhankyzy and Nursaulet Amre, undergraduate student Alan Mukhtar, and choreography faculty graduate Akkanat Smagulova.

On 14 November, during the practical section, they presented the masterclass "The Plastic Language of Kazakh Dance", developed by A. Sadykova. The sections on Kazakh men’s and women’s dance were accompanied by detailed explanations of the symbolic meaning of movements and elements, their philosophical significance, and their role in reflecting the national identity embedded in Kazakh dance.

Warm and enthusiastic feedback from viewers, participants, and conference organisers reaffirmed the uniqueness, self-sufficiency, beauty, and depth of Kazakh dance, as well as its high standard of teaching and its special place in the world of choreography.

On 15 November, Inkar Aidarkhankyzy, Nursaulet Amre, and Akkanat Smagulova participated in the concluding concert of the conference, performing works choreographed by Anvara Sadykova and Almat Shamshiyev: "Altynai", "Aqqu", and "Tokymkagar". During her time at the conference, A. Sadykova also visited the editorial office of the renowned Ballet magazine, where editor-in-chief Valeria Iosifovna Uralskaya presented her with an issue featuring Sadykova's article commemorating the anniversary of Kazakhstan's first professional ballet school.

"It was a great honour for us to represent the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography at an international conference at GITIS, an institution where masters of Kazakh choreography once studied and made significant contributions to its development. We are proud to have successfully showcased our school, where the traditions of Russian and Kazakh ballet art continue to be passed down and upheld across generations," said A. Sadykova.
