First International Scientific and Practical Conference "Language and Dance. The Language of Dance"

The Institute of Linguistics, Russian Academy of Sciences (IYaZ RAN), the Russian Institute of Theatre Art – GITIS, and the Centre for Socio Cognitive Studies of Discourse at Moscow State Linguistic University invite you to participate in the First International Scientific and Practical Conference "Language and Dance. The Language of Dance." The conference will be held from November 13 to 15, 2024, at the Institute of Linguistics, Russian Academy of Sciences (1 Bolshoy Kislovsky Lane, bld. 1) and at the Russian Institute of Theatre Art – GITIS (6 Maly Kislovsky Lane).

The conference is held within the framework of the "Priority-2030" strategic academic leadership program. Organizers: IYaZ RAN, Russian Institute of Theatre Art – GITIS. With the support of: Moscow State Linguistic University (Centre for Sociocognitive Studies of Discourse). Researchers in linguistics, applied linguists, specialists in multimodal communication, choreography, critics, choreographers, dancers from various styles, educators teaching dance disciplines in universities, and other specialists in these fields are invited to participate as speakers. The conference language will be Russian, with English available for international participants.

Conference topics:

  1. Dance and national identity.
  2. Gestures in language and dance (multimodality — gestures in spoken language and in dance and choreography).
  3. Dance vocabulary and the description of movements in various languages; the issue of describing and fixing movements in choreography.
  4. Cognitive linguistics and understanding dance in various dance styles and schools.
  5. Research on artificial intelligence, robots in language, and robotics in dance; machine dances in choreographic performances and dancers with osteosynthesis.
  6. The national aspect in language and dance. Language and mentality, and dance and mentality (looking forward to hearing from dancers of different nationalities regarding the influence of language on dance and the culture of choreography).
  7. Semiotic studies in language and choreography.
  8. The human in motion, in everyday life or within linguistic experiments, and the human in motion in a specific dance style or in a choreographic piece.
  9. The importance of gaze and facial expression in choreography and language (research with eye-tracking experiments).
  10. "Theatrical" gestures in everyday life and gestures in acting (theater, cinema). Pantomime in choreography.
  11. Dance, music, and sign languages.

Conference Format: Hybrid (in-person and online). Dates: November 13–15, 2024 ● November 13–14: Plenary sessions, sectional meetings, and round tables. ● November 15: Master classes and performances. Presentation Guidelines: ● Plenary sessions: 30 minutes ● Sectional meetings: 15-20 minutes ● Round tables: 10 minutes ● Master class format will be arranged in advance.
