Carlos Romero Conducts Residency at the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography

Honorary guests from Spain — dancer and choreographer of the National Ballet of Spain Carlos Romero and his assistant Lucía García — visited the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography.

Carlos Romero is a graduate of the Royal Professional Dance Conservatory Mariemma in Madrid. He was a principal dancer with the National Ballet of Spain and has performed on stages widely regarded among the finest in the world, including the Teatro Real, Bunka Kaikan, the Royal Opera House, and the Metropolitan Opera.

Since 2022, together with Tania Martín, he has co-directed the Professional Dance Studio of Tania Martín and Carlos Romero in Madrid, focusing on teaching, and they also head the “Spanish Dance” department at the Escuela de Flamenco de Andalucía.

In 2024, he was awarded the International Dance Award — the Italian Prize in Capri — in recognition of his artistic career.

As part of his creative residency at the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography, Carlos Romero worked with students of the Faculty of Choreography and the School-College of Vocational Education on staging a classical Spanish dance piece, introducing them to the distinctive features of the Spanish choreographic school, its stylistic nuances, musicality, and national character of movement.

The musical foundation for the production included “Boléro” by Maurice Ravel and “Las jotas” from the ballet El sombrero de tres picos (“The Three-Cornered Hat”).

The rehearsals were conducted in close collaboration with the Academy’s faculty members of specialized disciplines, taking into account the students’ age and level of training. The material was carefully adapted for different groups while preserving the authenticity of Spanish dance, its rhythmic complexity, expressiveness, and stage energy.

Assistant choreographer Lucía García is a professional Spanish dance performer and a graduate of the Professional Dance Conservatory of Murcia and the Conservatorio Superior de Danza Angel Pericet, where she specialized in Choreography and Performance. She is currently undertaking the EDPT professional development program under the guidance of Tania Martín and Carlos Romero.

She supported the rehearsal process with the Academy’s students, assisting in refining technique, musical accents, and stylistic nuances of performance.

This visit marks an important step in the development of the Academy’s international creative cooperation and provides students with a unique opportunity to gain professional experience working with leading representatives of the Spanish ballet school, broaden their artistic horizons, and deepen their knowledge of national choreography.

The visit of the Spanish guests was made possible through the comprehensive support of the Embassy of Spain in Kazakhstan, with which the Academy has established productive relations within the framework of a joint educational project supporting young talents.
