Kazakh School of Choreography Conquers the GITIS Stage: Mastery and Tradition on the International Scene

Representatives of the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography had a unique opportunity to present their school at the master classes of the GITIS-Exercice International Choreographic Laboratory. Out of numerous candidates from the Academy, students Bekarys Tolegen and Aidan Musaifova were selected under the guidance of Evgeny Moiseev, Senior Lecturer and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Choreography. Participation in this event highlights the Academy’s high level of professionalism and international recognition.

The event took place on October 27–28, 2025, on the historic stage of the GITIS Educational Theatre (Moscow, Russia) as part of the Priority-2030 Strategic Academic Leadership Program. The laboratory brought together prominent figures in choreographic education and art from Russia, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan — teachers, students, assistant trainees, master’s students from creative universities, members of professional dance ensembles, dance historians, and ballet critics.

The program included master classes in classical, folk, and ballroom dance, modern stage choreography, and concluded with a roundtable discussion featuring leading ballet critics and educators.

The goal of the master classes was to foster exchange of experience and ideas among specialists. The significance of such projects lies in their contribution to strengthening international professional cooperation.

Each session focused on a specific topic and choreographic style — ballroom and classical dance, modern choreography, tap dance, and flamenco.

The performance by representatives of the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography drew particular attention for its fusion of ballroom and Kazakh dance styles. Participants and organizers noted that this creative direction, pioneered by Kazakhstan, brings a fresh impulse to the development of dance art. Many expressed interest in adopting this experience so that Russian choreographers could also explore stylistic integration of various dance genres with traditional Russian dance.

In addition to the participants of the practical sessions, Gaukhar Ismagulova, a doctoral candidate at the Academy, delivered an online presentation at the final conference titled “The Contribution of the Scientific and Methodological Laboratory to the Preservation and Development of the Kazakh National Dance Heritage” (Scientific Advisor: Izim Toigan Ospankyzy).
